Concrete is Comforting

My collage and mixed media series, “Concrete is Comforting”, examines the dual nature of our psychological defenses. As children we develop protections that help us cope in our family systems. When we become independent we no longer need the complex defenses that kept us safe. Those safe systems that had helped us adapt and survive often become a prison. The work in this series is a visual depiction of the gradual unraveling of my most rigid psychological defenses through the process of psychoanalysis. This series explores the strong psychological desire for safety and comfort juxtapossed with the contrasting need for unpredictability and spontaneity. I am interested in showing the visceral experience of psychological change as it evolves through my unconscious.
